New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association

Empowering the Hispanic Legal Community

Our story

Community. Respect. Progress.

Since its founding in 1978, the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association has flourished into the leading minority bar association in New Mexico.

The NMHBA Board of Directors is made up of up to twenty-four voting members and a student member from the Mexican American Law Student Association at the University of New Mexico School of Law. Around three hundred attorneys and students are members of the NMHBA, coming from diverse backgrounds and areas of practice.

Some of our members are first-generation lawyers. Others practice in rural areas of New Mexico. And others are allies - people who care about diversity in the legal profession. We have one thing in common: a passion for promoting the education and development of Hispanic legal professionals

Mission/Vision

Our vision? Promote an established legacy of equality and empowerment for Hispanics in the legal community and education. Hispanics account for an increasingly large section of the U.S. population and electorate. In New Mexico, Hispanics have been a part of the state’s cultural, economic, and political heritage for centuries. Our mission is to maintain and increase the number of Hispanic legal professionals in the state by providing professional support to our membership.

Why does NMHBA exist?

The NMHBA exists to serve and benefit the Hispanic legal community in New Mexico. We offer CLEs, organize networking events and mentorship, and engage with Hispanic attorneys from law firms, government, non-profit organizations, and the judiciary to support and develop the legal careers of New Mexico’s Hispanic attorneys.
